Your Bloodwork Is "Normal." That Doesn't Mean Anyone Read It.

Most of the people who come to me have already done everything right.

They noticed something was off. They saw their doctor. They had blood drawn. And they were told what almost everyone is told: everything looks normal. So they went home, still tired, still struggling, still not themselves, now carrying the added weight of being told there's nothing wrong.

But often there is something there. It just isn't the kind of thing the standard tests are built to catch, and no one has read the results the way they need to be read.

What actually gets missed

One woman came to me worn down, close to depressed. She'd been through the standard system and came away without an answer. When we looked at her nutritional status properly, she had a clear vitamin D deficiency, so we corrected it, and worked on her gut at the same time, since she'd been having digestive issues too. A few weeks later she told me the low mood had lifted, her gut had settled, and she'd finally reached goals that had been stuck for years.

Another came in unable to lose weight, no matter what she tried. Been to the doctor and her labs showed T3 and T4 sitting low in the range, technically "fine," with no reason offered for the fatigue or the stalled weight. Instead of handing her another calorie target, we worked on lowering the inflammation that so often sits underneath this pattern, through food and daily habits. That's when the weight finally started to move.

A third arrived with cramping that hit after exercise. He'd read that magnesium helps, so he'd been taking it but the cramps stayed. His bloodwork showed magnesium that was actually too high. We stopped the supplement, shifted his focus to whole foods rich in the electrolytes his muscles were actually short on, and adjusted his carbohydrates and hydration. The cramps eased within a couple of days.

None of these people were sick in the way medicine screens for. They were running on incomplete, unbalanced building blocks, and that's a different problem than the one the healthcare system is built to catch.

The two places people get stuck

The first is public healthcare. Nutritional status is rarely tested there unless a specific symptom points a doctor toward a specific marker. But deficiencies tend to show up as diffuse symptoms: fatigue, low mood, poor recovery, brain fog, the everywhere-and-nowhere signs that don't obviously say check this nutrient. So the tests never get ordered. And when they are, it's usually just iron or vitamin D. The rest of the picture goes unmeasured.

The second is private practice, where the opposite happens: everything gets tested. Full panels, long lists of numbers. But breadth isn't the same as insight. Most of what comes back is read one marker at a time: this vitamin is low, that mineral is fine, here's your blood sugar, here's your cholesterol, much of it is lifestyle related and hopefully is addressed.

In both cases, the same thing is missing. No one is asking why. If you're low or suboptimal in one nutrient, you very likely have several others sitting alongside it, some of which won't even appear on a blood test, because many nutrients can't be measured accurately or is not available. Testing more isn't the same as reading what's there.

This is a different discipline

Here's a distinction I want to make gently, because it isn't a criticism, it's a matter of training and scope.

A doctor's job is to rule out and monitor disease. That's what their expertise is built for, and it's essential. Reading biomarkers as nutritional status, systematically, as a connected system rather than a list, is a separate discipline. It's nutritional science. People go to university to get their degree in this and it´s built on physiology, biochemistry, metabolism and microbiology, and on how to prevent and address disease through nutrition.

So when I look at a blood test, I'm not asking the same question a doctor asks. I'm asking: what do these numbers, together, along with the information I know about the person, tell me about whether this person's cells have what they need to function well?

What "systematic" actually looks like

Let me show you, because this part is genuinely hard to explain until you see it.

Say someone's vitamin D is suboptimal and so is their phosphate. On its own, low vitamin D reads as not enough sun. But paired with low phosphate, I start to think about diet rather than daylight often it means they're not eating dairy. If that's the case, the next question is: low-fat or full-fat? Because full-fat is also where you get vitamin K2, which is part of the bone-health picture. Which brings magnesium and calcium into it. But calcium is almost impossible to judge from a blood test the body holds it in tight homeostasis, so serum calcium reads normal almost no matter what you eat. If it is genuinely low, that's usually a signal of something else entirely, not of intake. So then I have to think about how much calcium this person actually needs which depends on age, situation, even genetics. And because calcium can inhibit iron absorption, I'd want to know what their iron looks like before I'd ever suggest raising it. 

That's one "low vitamin D." Look at everything moving behind it. None of it shows up if you read the marker in isolation.

The same is true elsewhere. If B12 is suboptimal but folate looks good, that points me toward an absorption issue, often low stomach acid or certain medications can also cause this. Flip it, B12 fine, folate low, and I'm looking at dietary folate intake instead. And if folate comes back very high while B12 is normal, I can usually tell right away the person is supplementing. Folate that high isn't harmless either, so it's not a level we want to leave sitting there.

Different causes, different meanings, for numbers that look almost identical on paper. You can't see any of it one marker at a time.

Why the surface fix isn't enough

Plenty of people do get the surface version of this. They find out their iron or vitamin D is low, they take a supplement, and they feel better. That's real, and it matters.

But it's still the surface. You can correct one number and still be running at a suboptimal level overall, because nutrition is the raw material for everything your cells do. Fixing one input while five others are quietly off doesn't get you to well. It gets you to less unwell.

That's the gap. Not a lack of testing, and not a lack of caring, a lack of anyone reading the whole picture as a connected system and asking why it looks the way it does, so the root cause can be addressed through a nutritional lens.

That's the work I do. And if you've been told you're "normal" but you don't feel it, that gap is very likely where your answer is.
